Gaia's Grief Transforming - The Installation
In an effort to shift and transform that grief, Montville started on the first of the four sculptures that eventually inspired the installation – a space in which others might have an experience of transforming their own grieving. The first piece is about the initial impact and her ensuing grief – twisting, off-balance, with a gaping hole. The second sculpture, begins to define that nascent spiral into potential growth, and is more figurative – a woman gleaning what remains, gathering and bringing it in. |
Gaia’s Grief Transforming was born out of Montville’s intense experience learning about the intricacies of climate change and the devastation experienced by our planet, caused by human ignorance, arrogance, greed and violence. Confronted with the knowledge that it is too late to reverse the negative impact on our planet, she began grieving the losses of the Earth that she is so profoundly connected to in her soul. She grieves for her grandsons, who are growing up in a world where the connection with Nature will become ever more challenging. |
The third is the chrysalis, spiraling inward and tending – explicit and precise in its purpose to protect while waiting for new growth. The last is the transforming piece. Here the Manzanita wood itself is a message – a resilient survivor with a blood-red inner core radiating energy. With 3 long curving scars, the spiral is unfolding, in essence saying “We carry the scars of our losses with us – they do not prevent us from growing.
